Colorado whitewater rafting company gets ready for a big weekend of business and festivities on the Arkansas River.

Press Release

Buena Vista, Colo. (PRWEB) May 22, 2013 - River Runners, a Colorado whitewater rafting company on the Arkansas River, officially kicks off the summer tourist season with Memorial Day weekend festivities to run May 24 – May 27, 2013.

The longtime river outfitter officially opened in April, but Memorial Day weekend is the first big weekend for rafting in Colorado, according to Eileen Peterson, general manager, River Runners.

“Kids are starting to get out of school, graduation ceremonies are wrapping up and the Arkansas River is starting to rise due to spring runoff,” Peterson explained.

The Riverside Grill at River Runners in Buena Vista, Colo. is set to open on Friday of Memorial Day weekend, which Peterson said is a big draw for locals and rafting guests.

“People love hanging out at the Grill before or after their rafting trip, but we also have a lot of locals who come down for the great food and unique atmosphere,” Peterson said.

River Runners will be hosting the Race to the Grill on Memorial Day, which is a low stress downriver race through the Milk Run section of the Arkansas River, according to Travis Hochard, operations manager, River Runners.

“This is a four mile sprint race that is open to rafts, kayaks, duckies and stand-up-paddle boards,” Hochard explained.

Registration for the Race to the Grill is at 11:00 am at River Runners and a free shuttle will be provided to Johnson’s Village where the race begins, according to Hochard.

The River Runners Royal Gorge Rafting Center, eight miles west of Cañon City, Colo., is also open for half day and full day rafting trips through the Royal Gorge and the Bighorn Sheep Canyon, according to Hochard.

“There is still space available, but it is best to book at least several days in advance to ensure availability,” Hochard said.

River Runners has been offering guided whitewater rafting trips on the Arkansas River since 1972. Choose from half day, full day and overnight rafting trips on beginner, intermediate and advanced whitewater. Raft any day May through Labor Day.

Press Release

A HIGH-POWERED international conference on sports tourism is to be held at the Durban International Convention Centre in September, 2013, alongside the annual Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE).

Conference speakers and delegates will thrash out how to bid and attract mega and medium-sized sports events to South Africa and the continent.

The conference, set to take place from September 10-11, will throw the spotlight on the trends, opportunities and challenges involved in luring events, as well promoting Africa as a training destination for northern hemisphere athletes in their winter months.

Organised by Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group, SETE is backed by the influential South African Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) with more than 60 national sporting federations affiliated to it, as well as CATHSSETA (Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, Sports Sector Education and Training Authority). The provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism and the region’s marketing body, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, are also giving the event their full support.

Sports tourism is now the fastest growing sector in the global travel industry and South Africa, with its world-class facilities, and is increasingly being seen as a major sports and events destination and is playing a part in the boom, with the economic spin-offs worth more than R6 billion-a-year to the economy.

SETE is now in its third year and the highlight of last year’s conference was the adoption of the National Sports Tourism Steering Committee’s 17-year strategy, which identified the key international events that South Africa should bid for as well as the domestic events that need government support to grow the industry.

A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes and September’s conference will assess the progress that has been made.

The possibility of hosting the Olympics was on the cards several years ago, but the government decided that it had other priorities at the time.

Tubby Reddy, the chief executive of SASCOC, has said that he hopes the government will consider the 2024 games when bidding opens in 2016, but adds that a lot of homework will have to be done first.

But other events to consider could be the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games, said Sugen Pillay, Thebe’s director for business development.

The programme includes such topics as positioning KZN as an events destination, South Africa’s bidding and hosting strategy, discussions on how local government can assist in supporting events, what influences the decisions of international sports federations to host events in Africa as well as how to ensure that events are financially viable. The key principles to formulate a sports tourism strategy for the African continent are also up for debate.

The exhibition component will also enable the sporting and tourism fraternity to network with the international and local buyers and showcase what they have to offer.

Mike Mabuyakhulu, the MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, said: “SETE is the premier trade show for sports and other events in Africa and I am extremely proud that it is the second year in a row that Durban and KZN is hosting this event.

“What makes it particularly special is the fact that it is taking place at the same time as the International CoachingCongress at the Coastlands uMhlanga Hotel.

“There is a natural synergy between these two events and the delegates attending the International Coaching Congress will also be participating in SETE 2013 which will give South African exhibitorsaccess to additional sports event decision makers.”

That experience allows Broach Sports Tours to excel with more than 50 sports travel packages over the course of the year, including 27 Major League Baseball tours, tennis travel packages to all four Grand Slam tournaments, racing travel packages to the Daytona 500 and other NASCAR events, plus the Masters and Ryder Cup.

That experience also makes Broach an expert of sorts for news media and fans looking for insider tips.

Broach Sports Tours has announced that Broach is available for media interviews worldwide or speaking engagements throughout the Carolinas throughout the summer. It’s part of Broach Sports Tours’ new “Tom Talks” promotional campaign that will be officially launched on May 22.

“I love to talk sports, and I love to talk about all the great venues we are fortunate enough to experience during our Broach Sports tours,” Broach said. “It’s a fascinating journey we go on each year. There are all the great, storied stadiums like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park that fans are familiar with, but there are also plenty of hidden gems that don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

Broach breaks down his favorite Major League stadiums into two categories – storied, historic stadiums and the relatively new state of the art stadiums. His favorite old stadiums are no surprise: Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Boston’s Fenway Park. His favorite new stadiums: Pittsburgh’s PNC Park and San Francisco’s AT&T Park.

Among his other observations:
Cleanest stadium: Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium.
Best stadium food: Arizona’s Chase Field Ballpark.
Best pregame meal: Crown Diner just outside New York’s Yankee Stadium.
Closest to the action: Pittsburgh’s PNC Park, although old Tiger Stadium in Detroit is the all-time best..
Worst fans: Philadelphia, by a wide margin.
Best fans: Midwest fans, be it in St. Louis, Cincinnati and most of all Chicago.

“Cubs fans are the best because they go to the game not expecting to win, they just go to the park to have a good time,” Broach said. “I also put Yankees fans higher up the list than some people think. Yankees fans have a reputation of not being friendly, but I find them to be very engaging.”

Those are just some of the observations Broach is willing to share with media or church or civic groups.

Of course, Broach has also taken groups to virtually every NFL stadium and can talk at length about Green Bay’s Lambeau Field or Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium, or the tailgating in Kansas City, or stadiums with the best traffic flow (Miami and Charlotte). He loves New York’s Madison Square Garden. And then, there’s Augusta National and the Masters, which may be the most-hallowed grounds in all of sports.

Broach Sports Tours, located in Charlotte, N.C., has been a leader in the sports and group travel industry for the past 21 years. Among its 27 Major League Baseball tours this summer are several geared to and around the 2013 Major League All-Star Game in New York. Broach Sports Tours will also be taking groups to the French Open tennis and Wimbledon in the coming months, and is offering specials on its U.S. Open tennis packages later this summer. Broach is also offering current discounts on its 2014 Westminster Dog Show and 2014 Ryder Cup golf packages.

Press Release

Tourism New Zealand has today announced the appointment of a working group (WG) tasked with developing a long-term strategy for golf tourism in New Zealand.

Over the next eight weeks the WG will undertake a comprehensive review of golf specific tourism in key in-bound markets, economic benefits, marketing and infrastructure needs.

Initial desk-based research and data collection is already underway.

The WG’s activity is part of Tourism New Zealand’s strategy to drive higher-value visitors, with a focus on delivering value growth for the industry now, as well as in the medium and long-term.

It is further supported by Tourism New Zealand’s recent increase in funding to up-scale the promotion of special interest travel from core markets.

Justin Watson, General Manager Marketing Communications, says golf has been identified as a priority special interest sector due to the number of high-value travellers it attracts and its strong potential for growth.

“Golf is a popular international visitor activity. New Zealand has always been fortunate to have amongst the most golf courses per capita anywhere in the world. In recent years there has also been an enormous investment in both existing and new facilities resulting in an outstanding opportunity to grow this highly valuable sector of our tourism industry.”

Meeting for the first time this week, the working group (WG) is comprised of five members: Greg Turner (Chair); Geoff Burns; Peter Cutfield; Michael Goldstein and Chris Atkinson. The group has been selected based on their cross section of professional skills in business, tourism and golf sectors.

The strategy will identify ways to use golf tourism as a means to increase the returns from international visitors to New Zealand.

The WG is working to produce a draft strategy to Tourism New Zealand by the end of June.

Press Release

Bangkok, February 26 — Thailand will become the world’s leading golf tourism destination within three years if current growth trends continue.

Thai golf tourism is riding on the back of a tourism explosion to the kingdom, with total foreign arrivals doubling in the past seven years to more than 22 million in 2012.

Mark Siegel, the principal of Thailand’s largest inbound golf tourism company, Golfasian, says golf tourism to the kingdom has also skyrocketed to an estimated 750,000 arrivals in 2012, up 50 percent in the past three years.

If this pace of growth continues, Thailand will pass Spain as the world’s most popular golf tourism destination in 2015 or 2016.

Siegel estimates golf tourism was worth 86 billion baht or $US2.88 billion in land arrangements alone to Thailand in 2012.

“The past year and the high season now ending have been quite amazing,” he says. “For the first time in several years there was no impediment to Thailand’s huge international appeal – no floods, political unrest or local economic issues. Everything has been ‘go’ and that’s what has happened. Golf tourists have voted with their feet and have overwhelmingly chosen Thailand.”

Siegel expects 15 percent further growth in 2013 to more than 850,000 golf visitors, worth $US3.68 billion, with the one million mark in visitor numbers expected to be passed in 2015.

This would put Thailand on an equal, or similar, footing with Spain, which has dominated international golf tourism for more than a decade, but has been losing market share to emerging destinations including Portugal, Turkey, North Africa and Asia, especially Thailand.

Mark Siegel – who is also the founder of Golf In A Kingdom marketing collective that includes Thailand’s leading golf courses, hotels and resorts – says an estimated eight to nine percent of foreign visitors to Thailand play golf, whereas less than half a percent of Vietnam’s seven million foreign visitors and about one percent of Malaysia’s 25 million do so.

The reason? “Largely, because of the great experience of playing golf in Thailand – the courses, weather, caddies, tourism infrastructure, friendliness of the people, safety and cost. But Thailand also has led the way in promoting golf tourism,” he notes. “Golf is one of Thailand’s four official tourism marketing pillars and, consequently, the government has put a big effort into promoting golf tourism.

“Another reason is the large number of repeat visitors. Year after year golfers come back, especially during the northern hemisphere winter, and from within Asia itself. No other golf tourism market comes close to Thailand in securing repeat business.”

Just as Asia itself is the major supplier of all tourists to Thailand – about 13 million of 22 million or 60 percent of the total – the same applies to inbound golfers. About two-thirds – some 500,000 in 2012 – come from Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, India and, increasingly, China.

“The level of Chinese golf tourism is growing every year,” Siegel says. “Whereas a few years ago, we hardly saw any Chinese golfers in Thailand, it has become reasonably common. There’s no doubt China will be a major feeder market for golf tourism to Thailand and other countries in the future.”

Although relatively small in visitor numbers, North America is also target.

“We are starting to see US golfers,” Siegel adds. “After four years of attending the PGA Show [in Florida each January] there’s at least an acknowledgement that Thailand exists as a golf destination. While numbers are growing yet, it’s a market we will continue to pursue.”

In May, Golf In A Kingdom is to be officially launched to international media, with 40 writers and editors including 10 from North America invited.

Stacey Walton, the general manager of Banyan Golf Club near the southern resort centre of Hua Hin, says the December to February high season has been a record in both rounds played and revenue for the six-year-old course.

“We’re expecting 2013 will be even better with 45,000-plus rounds on the course,” he says.

Walton says one major change in the past year has been the number of Australian visitors. “We used to get just a few from Australia, but now there are Australians here almost every day. It has become our main emerging market.”

At nearby Black Mountain Golf Club, which opened in 2007 and has twice been named the best course in Thailand, general manager Harald Elisson says the course has been full every day of the high season.

“It has been an extremely good year, but so has every year since we opened,” he says. Owned by Swedish interests, Black Mountain has developed a fully-integrated resort on the property with a championship and par-3 course, condominiums and villas, a water park and wakeboard park, spa, tennis and other facilities.

“Black Mountain is geared towards a total family experience,” Elisson explains. “It’s all about providing a variety of high quality facilities, which is what people want and appreciate.”

Meanwhile, the CEO of the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators, Peter Walton, says 2012 was a good year for golf tourism, with winners and losers.

“Thailand is an interesting case because the golf courses have been brimming with international golf travellers, which, for those familiar with the dramatic surge in tourism Thailand is experiencing might take for granted.

“But the largest increase in general leisure tourism to Thailand has come from the Russian and Chinese markets. This is not where the growth in golf has come from. Russia is not a significant golfing market and China is still a few years away from being a market leader in golf travel.

“Market mix brings stability and sustainability to any destination and therefore this is excellent news for Thailand in a year when golf represents one of the four golf tourism pillars that the Tourism Authority of Thailand is focusing its attention on.”

Footnote: IAGTO’s second annual Asia Golf Tourism Convention is to be held in Pattaya, Thailand in late April. The organisation, which is the peak golf tourism body worldwide, has just completed its first international golf tourism survey, results of which ate to be released in the next few weeks.

(TRAVPR.COM) ANGUILLA - May 1st, 2013 - The Anguilla Open – a “First Class” Golf Event June 7th, 8th & 9th
Preparations are underway at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa for the eagerly anticipated 2013 Anguilla Open Golf Tournament sponsored by General Electric. The 2nd Annual Anguilla Open is a Championship Golf Tournament that will draw up to one hundred golfers from Anguilla, St. Martin, Antigua, Guadeloupe, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico and The United States. Participants will enjoy 3 rounds of Golf on the stunning Greg Norman Signature Golf Course as well as lavish Opening and Closing Receptions and delicious lunches during play. Visitors who play in the tournament can also benefit from greatly reduced rates at Cuisinart Golf Resort & Spa.

The team at the golf course has been diligently recruiting players and sponsors for the National Championship to be held in early June. General Electric is the Title Sponsor for the 2nd year in a row and the Conair Corporation has also signed on as a major sponsor. Inovateus Solar TSG Water will be sponsoring the Opening and Closing Receptions respectively.

Ryan Bowey, the Head Golf Professional at the Club and the organizer of the event says: “We are very thankful to our signature sponsors but we are still looking for additional sponsors for various categories like Hole-in-One and Top Prize. Sponsorships are so significant because the purpose of The Anguilla Open is to raise funds for Junior Golf in Anguilla. Fifty percent of the sponsorship dollars, after some expenses, go directly into a “Junior Golf Fund” that we created last year. The game of golf teaches children many life skills and builds character, which is an initiative of ours on the island. Among other things, the game of golf teaches juniors honesty, integrity, respect, judgment, responsibility, confidence and perseverance. The funds from the Anguilla Open are helping us develop a junior golf program on the island so we can expose the youth of Anguilla to this great game.”

The setting for this event is stunning with The Club House and much of the course benefiting from breathtaking views of St. Maarten/St. Martin and the Caribbean Sea. Combine this with the attentiveness of the entire staff at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa and the event is expected to once again be a “First Class” occasion.

Registration is: $350 and includes 3 rounds of Golf, 2 Lunches, Opening and Closing Receptions, Prizes and Gift Bag. Sponsorship Opportunities from $150 to $2000 are still available. For more information about sponsorships, playing in the event, stay and play packages at Cuisinart Golf Resort & Spa or to schedule an interview with Ryan Bowey, please call 264-498-8602 or email Ryan at rbowey@cuisinart.ai
