Canary Islands: big sporting events in 2023   

With natural beauty, warm climate and a unique blend of activities, the Canary Islands are an ideal place to enjoy sport and adventure. In 2023, the islands will also play host to a number of big sporting events. Here we look at some of the sport event highlights coming up. 

6 May: Bestial Race Fuerteventura

The Bestial Race Fuerteventura will take place on 6 May, offering participants a new route through desert mountains and beaches with new obstacles. With two different routes to choose from, the race promises fun and excitement for everyone.

20 May: Lanzarote Ironman

The 31st edition of the Lanzarote Ironman will take place on 20 May. Participants will tackle a challenging 3.8km swim, 180.2km cycle and 42.2km run. The event will also offer slots for the 2023 IRONMAN World Championship. 

8-10 June: Tenerife Bluetrail

Sports enthusiasts can also take on the Tenerife Bluetrail from 8-10 June. The event features ten modalities, including a family race, one for children, and one specifically for young runners. 

10 June: Isla de La Palma Swimming Crossing

The Isla de La Palma Swimming Crossing, a 17km race for professional open water swimmers, will take place on 10 June. This year, the 4km race will be part of the competitions of the Official Open Water Cups of the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation and the Canary Islands Swimming Federation.

13-15 July: Fred Olsen Alpes de La Gomera 

Tecina Golf will host the Alps de La Gomera from 13-15 July – an event belonging to the Alps Tour, a professional men’s golf circuit with more than 20 years of history.

20 July-6 August: Windsurfing and Kitesurfing World Championships 

Sotavento beach in Fuerteventura hosts the best windsurfing and kitesurfing athletes in July and August.  

24-26 August: Famara Total

The mountain race Famara Total will be held from 24-26 August in Lanzarote, and is one of the most important trail races in the Canary Islands. With different modalities to choose from, including the Vertical Famara Total, a race in which participants will have to climb the Risco de Famara, the event promises fun for the whole family. 

19 November: Gran Canaria Maspalomas Marathon

The Gran Canaria Maspalomas Marathon is the perfect fusion between sport, tourism and leisure. This is the southernmost marathon in Europe.
