From Bulgaria’s cliffs to Norway’s midnight sun: seven underrated golf destinations

A golf break on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast or a round beneath Norway’s midnight sun? Golfbreaks has selected seven European destinations for players looking to take their next trip beyond the familiar golfing hotspots.

The tour operator’s picks range from coastal resorts with several courses on the doorstep to destinations where golf can be combined with surfing, hiking and exploring historic towns.

The selection is supported by Golfbreaks’ internal booking data, comparing 2026 with the equivalent period in 2025. It comes as the company reports rising UK Google search interest in golf package holidays and quieter courses, using Google Trends figures current to September 2026.

“Golf is steeped in tradition, and course quality is often judged by history and reputation,” said Cameron Ritchie, head of product – Europe at Golfbreaks. “But some of Europe’s most rewarding experiences can be found away from the established resorts.”

Here are the seven destinations selected by Golfbreaks, with courses and accommodation options for planning a trip.

1. Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast: cliff-top courses around Varna

The coastal golf cluster north of Varna takes first place, with Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort its standout attraction. The course follows the cliffs above the Black Sea, with water views from every hole.

BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas offers another clifftop layout, while Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort adds a further stay-and-play option. Together, the three resorts provide scope for a holiday built around several courses.

Golfbreaks reports that its bookings for Bulgaria rose 173% year on year in 2025, followed by a further 47% increase in 2026 to date. Away from golf, the region offers beaches, thermal springs and hiking trails.

2. Comporta and Tróia: a three-course Portuguese escape

Portugal’s Comporta and Tróia Peninsula combine beach time with a choice of contrasting layouts south of Lisbon.

Terras da Comporta has two championship courses, Dunas and Torre, while Tróia Golf Club brings a Robert Trent Jones-designed test to the itinerary. The surrounding coastline and Sado Estuary provide opportunities to explore between rounds.

Golfbreaks reports an 85% year-on-year increase in bookings for the destination. Accommodation options include Pestana Comporta Village Residences and The Pearl Tróia.

3. North-east Majorca: golf beyond Palma

Majorca’s north-east offers an alternative base to the island’s south-western golf resorts, with Golfbreaks reporting booking growth of 20%.

Club de Golf Son Servera welcomes visiting players to its tree-lined fairways, while the Dan Maples-designed Capdepera Golf Club brings the Llevant mountains into play. Club de Golf Alcanada adds another option for a wider island itinerary.

Iberostar Waves Cala Millor is among the suggested places to stay, with beaches and traditional towns providing plenty to explore when the clubs are packed away.

4. Gimsøya: a midnight-sun golf trip

For a different kind of golf holiday, Lofoten Links on the Norwegian island of Gimsøya offers summer rounds beneath the midnight sun.

Above the Arctic Circle, the course combines coastal dunes and rugged ground with views of the sea and surrounding peaks. The setting makes the landscape as much a part of the experience as the golf.

Lofoten Links Lodges provides a nearby accommodation option. Regional gateways include Leknes, Svolvær and Harstad/Narvik airports.

5. Biarritz: fairways, surf and French Basque culture

Biarritz offers a golf trip with plenty of variety beyond the scorecard, from surf beaches to architecture and excursions into the surrounding Basque Country.

Golf de Biarritz le Phare, one of France’s oldest courses, is joined by Golf d’Arcangues, where rolling hills frame views towards the Pyrenees. Golf de Seignosse extends the choice for players planning a regional tour.

Golfbreaks lists Tonic Hotel as an accommodation option.

6. Tavira: exploring the eastern Algarve

Golfers who already know the Algarve can look east towards Tavira for their next Portuguese break.

Nearby Quinta da Ria overlooks the Ria Formosa Natural Park, while neighbouring Quinta de Cima offers undulating terrain and water hazards. Monte Rei Golf Resort adds a Jack Nicklaus Signature course to the regional line-up.

Staying at Monte Rei keeps golf central to the trip, while AP Cabanas Beach & Nature is another accommodation option for exploring the eastern Algarve.

7. Costa Navarino: four courses in the Peloponnese

Costa Navarino offers a substantial golf itinerary within one destination in Greece’s Peloponnese, with Golfbreaks reporting a 140% increase in bookings.

Players can choose between The Dunes, The Bay, the International Olympic Academy Course and The Hills Course. The latter two opened in 2022 and were designed by two-time Masters champion José María Olazábal.

Accommodation choices include The Westin Resort Costa Navarino, The Romanos and W Costa Navarino, with Kalamata International Airport the main arrival gateway.
