Les Gets celebrates milestone 90th year: what’s new for winter 2026-2027?

The French Alpine resort of Les Gets is preparing for a milestone winter as it celebrates 90 years since the installation of its first ski lift in 1936.

Located in Haute-Savoie, Les Gets has grown from a traditional farming village into a popular ski destination while retaining its Alpine heritage and character.

The resort forms part of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, connecting 12 resorts across France and Switzerland. Together with neighbouring Morzine, Les Gets offers 120 kilometres of ski runs, 74 pistes and 50 lifts.

90 years of skiing in Les Gets

The story of Les Gets as a ski resort began in 1936 with the installation of its first ski lift, known as La Boule de Gomme.

The original lift was a far cry from today’s infrastructure, with wooden pulleys and poles and seats made from bicycle saddles.

Les Gets established its first French Ski School (ESF) in 1937 and became one of the first resorts in the world to experiment with converting a drag lift into a chairlift in 1947.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Les Gets will host special editions of its Red Ski Show on 8, 15 and 22 February and 1 March 2027.

The shows will feature freestyle skiing displays, piste patrol presentations and snow-grooming demonstrations, alongside dedicated anniversary celebrations.

New chairlift and beginner snowpark

While celebrating its past, Les Gets is also investing in its ski infrastructure.

On Mont Chéry, the resort is adopting a circular-economy approach by reusing the Grains d’Or chairlift as part of the Pointe chairlift project, replacing three older installations.

Meanwhile, a new beginner-friendly snowpark beneath the La Croix chairlift will replace the existing mini boardercross course, featuring obstacles designed for skiers and snowboarders developing their freestyle skills.

Learn to ski at the 1er Ski Festival

Complete beginners can discover skiing at the 1er Ski Festival from 20-27 March 2027.

The week-long event combines morning lessons with local ski instructors, afternoon activities and communal evening meals, offering a sociable introduction to winter sports. Stays start from €699.

Winter trail running and comedy

The Les Gets Winter Trail by Rossignol returns on 16 January 2027, giving runners the opportunity to explore the snow-covered mountains after dark.

The event features distances ranging from 800 metres to 20 kilometres, with routes taking participants through the ski area.

For entertainment off the slopes, Les Gets Comédie returns from 11-17 March 2027, featuring comedians Paul Taylor, Elie Semoun, Anne Roumanoff and Paul de Saint-Sernin. Tickets start from €23.

Winter adventures beyond skiing

Les Gets offers plenty of activities beyond skiing, including guided electric fat-bike excursions along snow-covered trails and dog-sledding experiences.

Families and thrill-seekers can also try the four-season mountain luge, which reaches speeds of up to 40 km/h.

After dark, Alta Lumina offers an immersive one-kilometre forest trail combining lighting, music and storytelling.

For adults travelling alone, The Ski Gathering offers group ski holidays combining time on the slopes with opportunities to meet other travellers. Week-long stays start from €600.

Alpine heritage and sustainability

Visitors can explore the resort’s history at the Museum of Mechanical Music, home to more than 900 instruments, or discover local cheesemaking traditions at La Fruitière des Perrières, established in 1906.

A new 750-square-metre media library is also opening in the former presbytery, featuring reading areas, children’s facilities and a digital cultural space.

Environmental initiatives include reusable wooden ski passes, wildlife protection measures and discounts for train travellers through the AlpinExpress scheme. A new Montagne Verte second-hand shop is also opening this winter.

Les Gets winter 2026-2027 opening dates

Les Gets plans to partially open on 12 December 2026, subject to snow conditions, with the full ski area opening on 19 December. The winter season is scheduled to run until 11 April 2027.
