Sports travel bucket list: Traws Eryri mountain bike holiday in North Wales

Following the Traws Eryri Cycling UK route, Saddle Skedaddle’s new seven-day guided mountain bike holiday in Eryri National Park covers some of the best off-road trails North Wales has to offer. Starting with a loop ride on Mach Trails, riders follow a mix of steep gravel climbs and flowy single-track descents, while taking in sprawling views over the Plynlimon mountains. Riding deeper into the heart of North Wales, an alpine-style singletrack road leads up the historic Ffordd Ddu to uncover views of Barmouth Bay as Eryri National Park comes into view.

Crossing the Grade II-listed Penmaenpool Toll Bridge across the River Mawddach to the lower Wynach Valley, gravel tracks take riders to the remote lake of Llyn Cwm-mynach. The route then jumps off the official Traws Eryri route to explore some hidden blue and red trails around Coed y Brenin. After a steep and rocky climb up Sarn Helen Roman Road, riders are rewarded with sweeping views of the wild Rhinog mountain range.

Other highlights include off-road riding on the remote Penmachno forest trails, switching between forest tracks, rooty single tracks, and volunteer-maintained MTB trails; the descent from Llyn Elsi reservoir to the alpine-style village of Betws y Coed; and the off-road ride along the Las Ogwen cycle path past towering slate pyramids on the Snowdonia Slate Trail. The final ride of the trip sees the landscape change from imposing mountain passes to coastal views of the Menai Strait towards Anglesey.

Following lesser known trails, the route heads inland over moorland and criss-crossing trails before descending to the historic walled town of Conwy, and the finish point of the trip at Conwy Castle.

To support cycling infrastructure in the UK, Saddle Skedaddle donates 5p for every mile one of its customers rides on Cycling UK routes. Riders can donate to Cycling UK to help with the upkeep of this route and others like it. Saddle Skedaddle also donates £10pp towards the upkeep of the Penmachno Trails used on this holiday.
