Slovakia’s popular dish and drink: a culinary quest to fuel active pursuits

Any sports nutritionist will tell you that putting the right ingredients in will get the best results out.

A healthy and active region requires some hearty cuisine, so why not up the calorie count when you know you can walk, hike, cycle or ski it off later?

Slovak cuisine includes plenty of delicious dishes and drinks that will have you pushing your limits in nature. Here are two you cannot miss trying…

Bryndzove Halusky by Gregory Finster (Wikipedia)

Bryndzove Halusky: A Slovak favourite dish

Slovakia has not just put ingredients into a bowl to create their own unique tastes, but have mixed in the influences from its central and eastern European neighbours. So let us introduce you to “Bryndzove Halusky” (potato dumplings), which is considered the national dish of Slovakia and compared to Italian gnocchi. These dumplings are covered with sheep cheese (Bryndzove) and combined with locally-sourced smoked bacon and bacon drippings.

Did you know? Halusky is so popular that songs and a festival are devoted to it

Tatratea originated from the High Tatra Mountains

Tatratea: Slovakia’s favourite drink

It makes sense that Slovakia’s national drink originated from the High Tatra Mountains; if you imagine a bygone era during the harsh long winters, respite from the cold was to drink herbal tea mixed with concentrated alcohol, and so was born Tatra Tea. Mountain folk of old would have used it as a form of medication and of course to socialise, so in fact, not that much has changed in this respect.

Did you know? More than 500,000 bottles of the liqueur are sold every year
