Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the region of Trentino provides the perfect winter escape for travellers seeking an authentic Italian alpine experience. This season the region, which at this time of the year is recognised for its interconnected pistes and beautiful scenery, has revealed several world-class additions to its facilities and infrastructure.
Ski resorts: early opening
Following a flurry of early November snow, ski resorts in Trentino are now anticipating an earlier-than-expected opening to their slopes. The popular resorts of Madonna di Campiglio in the Trentino Dolomites, Presena Glacier-Tonale (Val di Sole), Val di Fiemme and Paganella plan to open early while all remaining resorts will open in December.
Updated ski resort facilities
The Trentino region has renovated its cable car system and snow-generating technologies. A series of improvements concern all areas of the Campiglio-Dolomiti di Brenta ski area and will ensure a smoother transition from accommodation to the slopes. Among the 53 new cable cabins, one is equipped with a transparent floor to provide a “suspended in space” experience. When designing the system, particular attention was paid to optimal environmental integration with the two departure and arrival stations designed to blend in with the natural environment.
The Rifugio Doss del Sabion restaurant has also re-opened. Fit with a terrace offering 360-degree panoramic vistas of the Adamello Group and the Brenta Dolomites, the gourmet menu will no doubt be popular among visitors this winter, who will enjoy tasty food and sublime refreshments in the fresh air and mountain sun.
FIS Women’s Alpine World Cup
On 24-25 February 2024, the world’s best women slalom skiers will descend upon Val di Fassa for the FIS Alpine World Cup. Crafted in 2017, La ValotA, the famous black run slalom route, will once again challenge the world’s elite skiers as they whizz down the slopes of Col de Margherita. The route extends more than 2,350m, has an average downhill gradient of 28.4% (47% maximum gradient) and has an uphill altitude of 2,510m. The return of the event to La ValotA and the San Pellegrino ski area is a big boost for the Trentino region and outlines the technical excellence of the slope.
SkyAlps’s new service from Stansted to Bolzano
On 13 December, Italian airline SkyAlps will launch a new service connecting London Stansted to Bolzano, significantly reducing the transfer time for skiers heading from the runway to the Trentino slopes. Travellers will now be able to reach the popular ski resorts of Val di Fassa in just over an hour which is three hours quicker than the traditional route from Milan Airport. Promoted as “The World’s Greatest Ski Lift”, the airline will operate two flights on Wednesdays and Sundays, with prices starting at €184 for a single fare.
