F1 returns to Africa: Rwanda to host African Grand Prix under landmark 10-year deal

Rwanda is set to become a major destination for Formula 1 fans and international sports tourists after a landmark agreement was announced to bring Grand Prix racing back to Africa for the first time in more than three decades.

Formula 1 has confirmed a 10-year partnership for the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, which is expected to join the championship calendar in the early 2030s.

The agreement will see F1 return to the African continent for the first time since 1993, when the South African Grand Prix was held at the Kyalami Circuit.

The project forms part of Rwanda’s wider ambition to establish itself as an international hub for sport, tourism, business and major events.

Where will the F1 African Grand Prix take place?

A new purpose-built circuit will be developed in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometres south of Rwanda’s capital Kigali, adjacent to the new Kigali International Airport.

The track will be built to FIA Grade 1 standards, with its design incorporating the area’s natural elevation changes to create a challenging racing experience and viewing opportunities for spectators.

Led by the Rwanda Development Board, the development will form part of a wider investment in sports tourism, infrastructure and commercial facilities.

Beyond Formula 1 race weekends, the circuit is intended to operate as a year-round destination hosting international motorsport competitions, conferences, entertainment and other major events.

An exact date for the inaugural African Grand Prix has not yet been confirmed, with the first race dependent on completion of the circuit.

Rwanda targets sports tourism growth with African Grand Prix

Rwanda has already established itself as a destination for major international sporting events, including the UCI Road World Championships, Basketball Africa League and FIA Awards Ceremony.

The arrival of Formula 1 is expected to strengthen the country’s international profile and attract visitors, investment and business opportunities.

“This is about much more than hosting a Grand Prix,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.

“Together, we can create lasting economic and social benefits through tourism, investment, skills development and local business growth, ensuring the positive impact of this event is felt for generations.”

Rwandan President Paul Kagame highlighted the importance of the long-term partnership for the country’s development.

“This 10-year partnership is also an investment in Rwanda’s future,” he said. “The circuit in Bugesera, alongside the new international airport, will bring jobs, skills, tourism and new business to our country and our region for decades to come, because our aim was never a single race weekend, but a lasting benefit for our people.”

Formula 1 estimates that Africa already has more than 100 million fans, with almost 60% of followers in key Sub-Saharan African markets aged under 35.
