Formula 1 returns to Istanbul in October 2027 with the Turkish Grand Prix

Istanbul is gearing up for the return of Formula 1, with the Turkish Grand Prix confirmed as part of the 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar.

The race weekend will take place at TOSFED İstanbul Park from 1-3 October 2027, with practice and qualifying sessions scheduled for the opening two days before the main race on Sunday 3 October.

It will be the first Turkish Grand Prix since 2021 and the tenth time the circuit has hosted a Formula 1 World Championship race.

Türkiye’s return to the F1 calendar was initially announced in April 2026 at a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The new agreement will see races staged at Istanbul Park for five consecutive years, from 2027 to 2031.

Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said: “With the announcement of the Formula 1 race calendar, we are also shifting into higher gears in our preparations. In the upcoming period, we will bring to life major projects that bring İstanbul’s history, culture, gastronomy, and lifestyle together with the global impact of Formula 1.”

Istanbul Park set for F1 comeback

Located on the Asian side of Istanbul, the 5.3km Istanbul Park circuit is regarded as one of Formula 1’s most technically demanding tracks.

Its combination of high-speed corners, elevation changes and overtaking opportunities has made it a popular venue among drivers and fans.

One of its most famous features is Turn 8, a fast, multi-apex left-hand corner that places significant lateral loads on drivers and tyres.

The circuit previously hosted the Turkish Grand Prix between 2005 and 2011, before returning to the calendar in 2020 and 2021.

With Formula 1 returning in 2027, Istanbul will once again welcome the world’s leading drivers, teams and international motorsport fans.

Turkish Grand Prix to boost sports tourism

The return of Formula 1 is expected to provide a boost to Istanbul’s sports tourism sector, attracting international visitors and generating additional demand for hotels, restaurants, attractions and other tourism services.

As one of the world’s major city-break destinations, Istanbul offers visiting F1 fans the opportunity to combine a weekend of motorsport with sightseeing and cultural experiences.

Straddling Europe and Asia, the city is home to landmarks including Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar, while Bosphorus cruises, food tours and waterfront neighbourhoods offer plenty of experiences away from the circuit.

The Turkish Grand Prix will also form part of wider efforts to promote Türkiye internationally through major sporting events.

The Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), working under the coordination of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, has already launched a promotional film titled Catch It If You Can, which has reportedly attracted more than 571 million views.
