Sports travel bucket list: ‘Run for the Rainforest’ Odzala Marathon

Organised by Kamba Africa – the only private operator granted concessions in the Republic of the Congo’s (ROC) National Parks – the ‘Run for the Rainforest’ Odzala Marathon may just be one of the most impactful endurance running events, and one of the most exclusive, with entries limited to just 50 runners.

Taking place next on 11 October 2025, the event raises vital funds for African Parks to continue their protection of the world’s second largest rainforest by allowing participants to fundraise among their network while experiencing one of the planet’s most pristine ecosystems in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The day will feature three distinct race categories to engage a diverse range of participants. The main 42km Odzala Rainforest Marathon begins at Kamba’s Lango Lodge and follows a dirt track through the park, finishing at Mbomo Village. This is complemented by the African Parks’ 21km Rangers Challenge Half Marathon, celebrating the dedicated individuals at the forefront of daily conservation efforts. For those seeking a more accessible experience, Kamba’s Run for the Rainforest 10km welcomes participants of all fitness levels.

The event aims to raise $50,000, with 100% of donations going directly toward conservation efforts, including wildlife protection, community development, and responsible tourism initiatives. For the first time, organisers will offer cash prizes for race winners to further attract and motivate top athletes.

To participate, Kamba Africa offers a seven-night participation package with guided tours to explore the rainforest and its abundance of wildlife, a pre-race pasta party and marathon entry – providing a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Odzala whilst supporting vital conservation efforts.

This year the event also aims to create a fun and interactive event for local children with the inaugural Odzala Olympics, giving them a fun-filled day of friendly competition and teamwork. The day will feature mini races, fun activities such as limbo, a sack race, tug-of-war and a team relay with obstacles.

Kristina Plattner, managing director of Kamba Africa, said: “We’re excited to welcome the Odzala Marathon back for 2025. It’s been incredible to see the event grow each year, drawing more international participants and generating vital awareness and support for the protection of the Congo Basin. This year, we’re especially proud to introduce the Odzala Olympics, a vibrant celebration of community. At Kamba, we’re honoured to help bring this fun, community-driven day to life.”

For sports enthusiasts and aspiring runners seeking a transformative travel experience, Kamba’s Odzala Marathon offers the chance to run through one of Africa’s most biodiverse environments while connecting deeply with nature and contributing to conservation efforts that protect the Congo Basin one step at a time.
