Europe has never been short of adventure, from alpine ridges to the Adriatic sea, volcanic islands and forested mountain ranges. And, as internal data from sports travel insurance provider SportsCover Direct shows a 182% increase in adventure travel and Pinterest predicts “darecations” as the travel trend of 2026, it’s shaping up to be the summer of adventure.
But, as rising fuel costs and wider geopolitical uncertainty push up the cost of travel, affordability is becoming just as important as adrenaline. To help budget conscious thrill seekers plan their summer trips, SportsCover Direct has analysed popular European adventure destinations, ranking them on the cost of flights, accommodation, food and leisure to reveal the best value spots for affordable thrills this summer.
With an index score out of 100, Europe’s top 10 most affordable destinations for adventure travel this summer are:
- 1 Krkonoše Mountains, Czech Republic 82.5 (pictured, top)
- 2 Galicia, Spain 82.0
- 3 Tatra Mountains, Poland 78.3
- 4 Murcia, Spain 77.4
- 5 Puglia, Italy 75.2 (pictured, below)
- 6 Belek, Türkiye 75.0
- 7 Gran Canaria, Spain 75.0
- 8 Sierra Nevada, Spain 74.7
- 9 Haute Provence, France 73.9
- 10 Brasov Romania, 73.7
The data shows that Eastern Europe offers the strongest overall value with three mountain destinations across the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania featuring.
In Western Europe, Spain dominates, claiming four of the top 10 sports including less touristic regions such as Murcia and the Sierra Nevada. Islands and coastal destinations also hold their own for water loving adventurers despite rising costs across the Mediterranean, but the overarching message for travellers is that Europe’s best value adventure destinations are found off the beaten track.
Chris Trotman, head of sales and underwriting at SportsCover Direct said: “The 182% rise we’ve seen in sports travel insurance policies over the past two years tells us that adventure travel is no longer a niche and it’s actually becoming the holiday of choice for a huge number of British travellers.
“With flight costs under real pressure this summer, partly driven by fuel prices and wider uncertainty in global travel markets, the destinations in this index matter more than ever. The good news is that some of Europe’s most spectacular adventure landscapes are also its most affordable and you genuinely don’t need to spend Alpine prices to have an Alpine quality experience.
“What we’d always say, though, is that wherever you’re going and whatever you’re doing, make sure your insurance reflects the activities you’re actually planning. The trip should be the adventure, not the claim afterwards.”

About the destinations
So, where should you go? Here’s what the data says about each destination…
Krkonoše Mountains, Czech Republic: Straddling the Czech-Polish border, the Krkonoše Mountains are one of Central Europe’s most underrated hiking destinations, with national parks and well developed trails making it a strong contender for walkers and runners. At £136 for return flights, accommodation at £81 per night and meals for under £6.50, it makes for the perfect affordable dupe to the Alps.
Galicia, Spain: On Spain’s northwest coast, Galicia is the country’s green, rugged counterpart to its popular sun soaked south. Coastal hiking along Camino routes, surfing on wild beaches and sea kayaking through dramatic scenery make it a versatile destination. Flights come in at the lowest in the ranking, at just £74 return, offering exceptional value for an alternative Spanish adventure that feels a world away from a package holiday.
Tatra Mountains, Poland: The Polish Tatras deliver an alpine experience that rivals destinations costing far more, all within a short transfer of well connected Krakow. Accommodation averages just £53 per night and meals come in under £7, making it the perfect destination for savvy hikers and climbers.
Murcia, Spain: Situated inland and off the tourist radar, Murcia’s dry landscape is well equipped for thrill seekers looking for canyoning, climbing, mountain biking and hiking through the Sierra Espuña. At £125 for flights and £52 per night for accommodation, it undercuts more familiar Spanish holiday destinations and shows a side of Spain that many holidaymakers don’t see.
Puglia, Italy: Coastal cycling, sea kayaking, cliff walks and diving make Puglia a destination primed for slow exploration. At £135 for flights and £71 for accommodation, it delivers a premium Italian experience without the matching price tag.
Belek, Türkiye: Best known as a golf hub, Belek also has varied water sports and the nearby Taurus Mountains for a change of scenery. Flights come in at the highest in the index (£238 return), but accommodation at £59/night and affordable meals at under £6.50 offset the higher flights for budget conscious travellers.
Gran Canaria, Spain: Gran Canaria is known for having a huge amount of diversity packed into its compact geography from volcanic hiking to trail running to surfing. Flights start at £144 return and accommodation averages £74 a night, with its year round conditions giving it a flexibility that seasonal holiday hotspots can’t match.
Sierra Nevada, Spain: Spain’s highest mountain range delivers a unique combination for Europe, mixing alpine hiking with warm Andalusian sunshine and the cultural draw of nearby Granada. At £145 for flights and £68 for accommodation, it makes a strong case as Spain’s most underrated adventure destination for summer 2026.
Haute Provence, France: Known for its lavender trail hiking and cycling, Haute Provence is a softer destination for slower, mindful movement, sitting outside of the more crowded and costly French Riviera. Flights start at £153 and meals can come in under £7 making it the only French destination in the top 10, delivering the French outdoor lifestyle without Côte d’Azur prices.
Brasov, Romania: At the foot of the Carpathians, Brasov offers hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching through Transylvania. Flights are on the higher end at £231, but more affordable accommodation (£62/night) and meals under £9 means it delivers mountain adventure at a wildness and scale its Western European equivalents can’t replicate.
