Andermatt unveils new sports centre facilities as part of long-term masterplan

Swiss mountain destination Andermatt has unveiled plans for a major new sports centre that will significantly expand its year-round sport and leisure offering for residents, second-home owners and visitors.

Developed by Andermatt Swiss Alps AG, the project forms part of the destination’s long-term masterplan and represents a major enhancement of the sports facilities originally proposed in 2008.

The new complex will feature a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports and recreation facilities, including climbing walls, a fitness centre, yoga studios, padel courts, a 25-metre swimming pool, a family leisure pool with outdoor pool, spa and wellness facilities, an outdoor ice rink, bowling, a kids’ club and an events space. A restaurant will also be incorporated into the development.

The scheme has grown considerably from its original concept of an indoor swimming pool and fitness room, with the planned floor area increasing from 2,300 square metres to approximately 5,000 square metres.

Located within Andermatt’s sports zone, the facility is designed to act as a central hub connecting the Andermatt Dorf and Andermatt Reuss districts while creating a year-round destination for sport, leisure and community events.

The final plans were shaped following consultation with local residents through an online survey and public workshops organised by the municipality of Andermatt. Feedback highlighted strong demand for water-based attractions, fitness and wellness facilities, family-friendly indoor activities, climbing and ice sports.

Samih Sawiris, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Andermatt Swiss Alps AG, said: “We didn’t want to settle for a minimal solution but rather create something we can be truly proud of. After considerable collaboration, we have designed a diverse and modern sports centre that benefits both the local population and visitors alike.”

Naguib S. Sawiris, Board Member of Andermatt Swiss Alps AG and Chairman of Orascom Development Holding, added: “The development of the sports zone is an important milestone in the overall development of Andermatt. It is about more than just a project – Andermatt is our home. That is why we have decided to invest more in the sports centre than originally planned.”

The sports centre will complement Andermatt’s existing outdoor and mountain sports infrastructure by strengthening its indoor, family and all-weather sports offering.

A joint operating company will be established between Andermatt Swiss Alps AG and the municipality of Andermatt when the planning application is submitted. Subject to approval, construction is expected to begin next year, with the new sports centre scheduled to open in 2032/33.
