Vietnam to open the world’s largest stadium in 2027 with 135,000 seats

Vietnam is preparing to open what is planned to be the world’s largest stadium, with the 135,000-seat VinFast – Trong Dong Stadium in Hanoi scheduled to welcome its first events on 31 July 2027.

Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup has announced a strategic partnership with international venue management company Legends Global to oversee the management and operation of the new stadium, which aims to become a major destination for international sporting, cultural and entertainment events.

The agreement will see Legends Global work alongside Vingroup to attract major international events, manage facilities and coordinate on-site services.

The company currently manages a global network of more than 450 venues, hosting over 20,000 events and welcoming more than 165 million guests annually.

A new landmark for sport in Vietnam

With a planned capacity of 135,000 spectators, VinFast – Trong Dong Stadium is being developed to become the world’s largest stadium by seating capacity.

The venue will feature an automated retractable roof, a playing surface designed to meet FIFA standards, and integrated real-time security and crowd-flow monitoring systems.

Its architecture draws inspiration from Vietnam’s cultural heritage, particularly the Dong Son bronze drum and the legendary Lac bird, combining traditional imagery with contemporary stadium design.

The stadium will form the centrepiece of the wider Hung Vuong International Sports Complex, which will include training grounds and large-scale sports facilities.

The surrounding development will also feature hotels, shopping centres, hospitals, parks, theatres, and cultural and culinary villages, creating a destination designed to accommodate international athletes, spectators and visitors.

The project is expected to support Vietnam’s growing sports tourism economy, attract international visitors and strengthen Hanoi’s position as a host city for major global events.

Bringing international sporting events to Hanoi

Legends Global will draw on its experience working with some of the world’s leading sporting venues, including Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Wembley-sized international event destinations such as Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium, and Optus Stadium in Perth.

The partnership will also focus on developing local venue management expertise and preparing the stadium for its opening in July 2027.

Nguyen Viet Quang, Vice Chairman and CEO of Vingroup, said: “VinFast – Trong Dong Stadium is far more than a sporting venue. With its world-leading scale, contemporary architecture inspired by Vietnamese cultural heritage, automated retractable roof, and playing surface designed to meet FIFA standards, we envision working alongside Legends Global to transform the stadium into a global gathering place for the finest sporting, cultural, and entertainment events.”

Dan Levy, CEO of Legends Global, added: “VinFast – Trong Dong Stadium is an extraordinary project for Vietnam, one that will help position Hanoi at the forefront of the global live events industry. Legends Global is honoured to partner with Vingroup on this landmark development. We look forward to sharing our expertise in venue and event management to help bring Vingroup’s ambition and vision for the world’s largest stadium to life.”

As preparations continue, Legends Global stadium expert Paul Sergeant OBE has arrived in Hanoi to oversee technical planning and pre-opening activities, while recruitment for the venue’s operations team is underway.

The stadium’s opening in 2027 is expected to mark a significant milestone for Vietnam’s ambitions to become a leading destination for international sport and live entertainment.
